Stepping Stones to Buying a Book

Authors, publishers, cover artists - they all work hard to put together a book presentation (e-book or otherwise)  that will snag you - the reader - to go further. To actually buy that book on the shelf - puppy dog eyes here.

For readers, let me invite you in on some little secrets. For the authors, let me if you agree. *g*

Sometimes a decision to purchase a book is as easy as a the author's name. The stepping stones to book purchasing can be like so:

I. Author name - if you know and like the name, you'll buy the book sight-unseen.

If this were the case for every author out there, my post would end now. Since it's not, let's continue.

For the rest of us hard working writers, how do we get noticed? It takes work. Plenty of work, above and beyond the story itself, that every author prays pays off.

I. Author name. Even if the author isn't known, is the name catchy, memorable, ambiguous, easy to spell, easy to pronounce, or detested because your ex's name was similar? An author cannot control all of these, but they have to hope for the best.

II. Title. I cannot begin to tell you how many hours can be brainstormed on getting the title of a book just right. Yes, sometimes the title comes first, or simply slips into the authors mind like a message in a bottle washed on shore. Then there are those stories, that when all is said and done, the author still hesitates. Does the title convey the feeling, the situation, the ultimate "umph" of the book? Trust me, I went through this episode recently with my upcoming release Good Gone Bad. I am thrilled with the title, but coming to these three little words meant pow-wows with my editor, BF, and a trash can full of notebook paper.

III. Cover. You notice the author's name. You like the title. Now, can or does the cover pull you in that much more? Of course it does. I've hesitated over the purchase of a book because I wasn't sure if the cover appealed to me or not. Then again, I've snatched up books because of the cover. Trust me, the cover makes a huge difference (thank you to all those hard-working cover artists out there!).

IV. Tag Line/Blurb. Whew. You've made it this far. You've seen the hook with the author's name. You've seen the bait called the title. You've grown interested by the cover. Now, is the tag line and/or blurb interesting enough to reel you in? Creating tag lines and blurbs can be hard. Yes, I'm freely admitting this. An author has to condense their entire book into something like 200 words that will tease you - the reader - into wanting more. And as for a tag line, oh boy. These can be as hard or as easy as the book's title.

What about you? What tempts you or catches your interest when making a decision to buy a book? Anything I've missed? I'd love to know.

Remember, the With Love Valentines Day Blog Hop is still going strong. Comments to this or any other of my posts on the days listed (Feb 11 - Feb 14) will enter you into my contest to win a prize package of a PDF copy of a story from my back list and a KamaSutra EroStick (international winners will get a gift certificate). Do You Peek at Endings?

Oh, I used to. All the time. When I'd come home from purchasing my newest read, I'd start the first few pages to get an idea of who was in the story. Then "oops," the book would flip over and what'd'ya know? The ending pages would be right there. In front of my face. My thumb just accidentally landed in the center of the page because, you know, I had to make sure the book didn't fall completely to the floor. An innocent blunder. (Hey, I had to say something to justify this guilty-slip).

Since I was on the page anyway, I'd read a little of the ending. The last line. Maybe the last couple of paragraphs. If it was really good, or I was completely intrigued, I'd read the entire last page! Oh man, I cannot believe I owned up to that one. But no more than the last page. Honest. Why? I knew the book would have a happily ever after; I knew the hero and heroine would end up together, so none of these reasons could spoil the book. *sigh* I really don't know why I'd read the ending first. To this day, I don't.  A force of habit?

That was then. Now we are in the age of e-readers. Endings are not so accidentally come-upon anymore. Yes, you can slip to the end, but it takes a little more work and ingenuity to, say, let your fingers slip to the menu tab and accidentally tap the "go to" button and oops, I was mentally out-of-it when my fingers told the e-reader to jump to the last page of the book.

See, not so get-away-able. At least, I've not been able to pull it off successfully yet. All told, I'm kinda glad, too. You see, the other day I pulled out a paperback romance I'd bought several months ago. I'd read perhaps a third of the book, happily turning page after page, when my old-habit fingers did their slip up and wham - I'm staring at the last page of the book. I struggled. Of course, like the proverbial cat, my curiosity got the better of me and I read. But only the last sentence. Good. *sigh* Then I read the sentence before that one. *ooh boy* My curiosity shoots up because I want to know what prompted this sentence, so I read the one before that.

Aaaarrrggghhh!

I went too far!!

For the first time in my rather long reading life, I set the book down. I have absolutely no interest in reading the story any more and it saddens me because I had been enjoying the tale. What happened? That third-from-the-last-line did indeed tell me how the story ended, which I expected, but it also answered the question that had been teasing me throughout the story I'd read so far. In reading the ending, I found my answer and it killed my interest in the teasing clues.

Is this the authors fault? Absolutely not. The blame is entirely my own. Now, if I had this story on one of my e-readers, I would have finished the story in its entirety. Oh well, I've learned my lesson. From now on, when I pick up a print book, I'll have to rubber band and staple and tape and otherwise weld the ending closed until I come to that conclusion in due course, by reading the book in it's proper order.

What about you? Do you peek at the endings and does this effect how you read the rest of the book? And if you have an e-reader, have you noticed a difference in your read-the-endings-first habit?

Writers ARE nuts - check it!

I just laughed so hard tears ran down my face. Yes, please join me!

Chuck Wendig writes a great blog (among other things), and is as funny as I wish I could be. His latest post is entitled "25 Reasons That Writers are Bug-Fuck-Nuts."

If you're a writer, you will absolutely relate. If you're a reader, now you know.

I fit into so many of these reasons it's unbelievable. The ones that hit me the most are 1, 7, 9, 10...do I really need to go on?

Need a good laugh, click the link below. Just make sure your liquid refreshment is put to the side for this one. Oh, and let me know which ones suit you!

Busy Much?

Hi World,

I know I've not posted much at all lately. Scrap that. I've posted nothing lately. I do have a good excuse, though. The past two weeks have found me writing my little fingers off. I've signed two contracts *happy dance* - one with Total E-Bound and another with Changeling Press. Both contracts for stories coming out this spring. This coming month I'll be neck-deep in edits as well as beginning another story with a due date fast approaching. Whew. Whoever thought writing was for the birds must not have been doing something right.

In addition to the stories, I will be posting a lot this month. I'm signed up for two blog hops with yummy contests for each. Details to follow soon, but the prizes come from Lucy's Love Shop, a fun place to indulge your wicked, romantic fantasies. You won't want to miss this!

Enjoy your Friday!
